This sweet girl’s name is Muriel.
Muriel is a tenth grader at my local high school, and is battling her fourth round of bone cancer. The cancer has spread to roughly five parts of her body, and there is a possibility that Muriel will not be with us much longer.
Muriel’s name was first mentioned to me by a teacher who asked me to sit with her at lunch, since Muriel does not have many friends. Since Muriel is rarely at school because of the severity of her cancer, I decided to visit her at her house today after school. I was expecting things to be slightly awkward, considering we’ve never formally met.. But, boy, was I wrong! Muriel, although quiet at first, spoke with such passion and humor about things like her family, (“I’m the middle child” she said to me, accompanied with an eye roll) her love of art, riding her bike, and her adorable chow lab, Jack. In total I spent an hour at her home, sitting in her living room just talking about life. Everything from old T.V. shows we watched as kids, to the children at the hospital that Muriel cares so much about.
It was such an enlightening experience for me, on so many levels. Spending this time with Muriel made me realize just how truly precious life is.
We need to seize the day, before the day seizes us.
I really hope that you could all reblog this post, and keep the sweet and beautiful Muriel in your prayers.
